Since its inception, NARIDE has worked relentlessly to transform the agricultural landscape of Eastern Uganda. Through strategic partnerships and community-driven approaches, we have empowered tens of thousands of smallholder farmers to adopt sustainable practices that boost productivity while protecting the environment.
Programme Goal
To improve household food security and income by promoting sustainable agricultural practices and management that is environmentally friendly.
Key Activities
-
1
Sustainable agriculture and technology development — improved poultry management, programmed hatching of chicks, livestock development, soil fertility management, soil and water conservation, tree planting, integrated pest and disease management, waste management, and smart cooking.
-
2
NARIDE has sensitized communities in the Districts of Pallisa, Namutumba, Kaliro, Butaleja, Tororo, Mbale, Kibuku, Budaka, Butebo, and Bukedea to actively participate in government programs like PDM — enabling over 20,000 people to benefit and change their lives.
-
3
Capacity building of rural farmers in post-harvest handling through training on using locally available resources like cow dung tumpline and silos.
-
4
Partnership with Caritas Uganda under the Uganda Farmers Common Voice Platform — constantly lobbying for farmers in areas of coverage to improve product quality and maintain standards. 30,000 farmers reached since 2019 in Pallisa, Kibuku, Butebo, Butaleja, Tororo, Busia, and Namayingo.
-
5
Restoration of 5 cooperative societies: Kalapata Cooperative Society (Pallisa), Kamonkoli Cooperative Society (Budaka), Nabiganda Cooperative Society (Butaleja), Dabani Cooperative Society (Busia), and Lubongi Cooperative Society (Tororo). These serve as food stores, market collection centres, and value addition sites — employing over 5,000 people.
-
6
Household nutrition improvement — over 15,000 mothers put at the forefront of identifying nutritious food for their children, especially following severe anemia and malnutrition cases in Bukedi sub-region.
-
7
Mobilization of farmers into saving groups and input revolving schemes.
-
8
Conducting research on agricultural production, productivity, marketing and value chain addition.
-
9
Entrepreneurship promotion and farming as a business among youth and women in both rural and urban communities.
-
10
Community-based education and provision of farm input support that promotes commercial agriculture.
-
11
Promotion of proper solid and indecomposable waste management in urban and peri-urban areas.
